Abstract | Este trabalho teve por objetivo analisar a variabilidade do ciclo anual da temperatura da superfície do mar (TSM) no Pacífico Tropical usando dados mensais do período de 1854 a 2006. As relações da variação do ciclo anual com fenômenos de mais baixa freqüência como o El Niño/Oscilação Sul (ENOS) e a Oscilação Decenal do Pacífico (ODP) foram também analisadas. Séries de TSM médias em duas faixas de latitudes (equador-20ºN e equador- 20ºS) foram obtidas e filtradas na escala do ciclo anual (0,7 a 1,2 anos) usando a ondaleta de Morlet. O ciclo anual de TSM mostra variabilidade interanual e interdecenal. Durante a fase positiva da ODP, o ciclo anual de TSM no hemisfério norte (HN) se intensifica no Pacífico oeste e leste, enquanto no hemisfério sul (HS) este se intensifica no Pacífico oeste e torna-se apenas ligeiramente mais intenso no Pacífico leste. Na fase negativa da ODP, o ciclo anual de TSM se enfraquece no Pacífico oeste e se intensifica no Pacífico leste em ambos os hemisférios. Para os eventos de El Niño (La Niña), houve uma intensificação (enfraquecimento) do ciclo anual de TSM no Pacífico oeste e um enfraquecimento (intensificação) no Pacífico leste. Para os eventos de El Niño na fase positiva da ODP, o ciclo anual de TSM se intensifica no Pacífico oeste em ambos os hemisférios, e no Pacífico leste o ciclo anual de TSM torna-se apenas ligeiramente mais fraco no HN, enquanto no HS não se altera. Para os eventos de El Niño na fase negativa da ODP, o ciclo anual torna-se apenas ligeiramente mais intenso no Pacífico oeste e se enfraquece no Pacífico leste em ambos os hemisférios. Para os eventos de La Niña durante ambas as fases da ODP, ocorre um enfraquecimento do ciclo anual de TSM no Pacífico oeste e uma intensificação do Pacífico leste em ambos os hemisférios. Portanto o ciclo anual de TSM apresenta variações que dependem do ENOS e da ODP. ABSTRACT: This work aimed to analyze the variability of the annual cycle of the sea surface temperature (SST) in the Tropical Pacific using monthly data from the 1854- 2006 period. The relationships of the annual cycle variations with lower frequency phenomena, such as the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) were also analyzed. Series of SST average in two latitudinal bands (equator-20ºN and equator-20ºS) were obtained and filtered in the annual cycle scale (0.7 to 1.2 years) using the Morlet wavelet. The SST annual cycle shows interannual and interdecadal variability. During the positive PDO phase, the SST annual cycle in the northern hemisphere (NH) intensifies in the western and eastern Pacific, while in the southern hemisphere (SH) it intensifies in the western Pacific and becomes only slightly more intense in the eastern Pacific. In the negative PDO phase, the SST annual cycle weakens in the western Pacific and intensifies in the eastern Pacific, in both hemispheres. For the El Niño (La Niña) events, the SST annual cycle shows intensification (weakening) in the western Pacific and weakening (intensification) in the eastern Pacific. For El Niño events in the positive PDO phase, the SST annual cycle intensifies in the western Pacific in both hemispheres, and becomes only slightly weaker in the NH eastern Pacific while it does not change in the SH eastern Pacific. For El Niño events in the negative PDO phase, the SST annual cycle becomes only slightly more intense in the western Pacific and weakens in the eastern Pacific in both hemispheres. For La Niña events in both PDO phases, the SST annual cycle weakens in the western Pacific and intensifies in the eastern Pacific in both hemispheres. Therefore the SST annual cycle presents variations that depend on the ENSO and the PDO. |
