ABSTRACT: In the present thesis we studied some climatological aspects of the atmosphere over. Natal. Using time-height sections for zonal wind and temperature, interesting connections could be found in the behaviour of the upper and lower atmospheres. An association between long-term precipitation variation and the variation for the zonal wind in the upper levels was found. Harmonic analysis of the 8 years of data of zonal wind and temperature yielded reliable estimates of the amplitude and phase of the Quasi-biennial, Annual and Semiannual oscillations. Statistical estimates of variance of each of these oscillations allowed us to conclude that quasi-biennial oscillation dominates the tropical lower stratosphere whereas the upper stratosphere is characterized by a dominant semiannual oscillation. Finally a comparison is made between the theoretical and observed aspects of these oscillations. |
