AbstractAlumina supported 0.05% NS 0.10% iridiu, platinum and ruthenium catalysts were prepared and characterized by hydrogen absorption. The activity of the catalysts in the conversion of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide was investigated in tests with a single bed converter. The carbon monoxide was generated by controlled combustion of ethyl alcohol, which is a common automobile fuel in Brazil. The combustion gas tests were performed with gas flow ratessimilar to those of automobile exhaust pipes. The results show the following sequence for the activity of the metals: Ir>Pt>Ru. Conversion rates as high as 90% were obtained with iridium catalysts. The catalysts with 0,05% and 0.10% of the same metal showed approximately the same activity.
