AbstractCold core cyclonic vortices in the upper troposphere over the Northeast Brazil, studies by Kousky and Gan (1989), present subsidence in their center and ascending motion on their borders. They are quasi-stationary - or slow moving systems. In the subtropics of South America, however, there are migratory cold core vortices in the middle troposphere which present cloudy and rainy weather. These vortices are small in their size (diameter of 1000 km or less) and are more frequent in tile southern winter. Two such vortices have affected south-central Brazil, one each in the periods 13-16 June and 6-9 July 1999. In the present study the structure and the life cycle of the June vortex is described.
