Keywords | NCEP Aviation Model SALLJEX South America validation upper air |
Abstract | Pilot balloon and radiosonde soundings from an enhanced upper air network operated during the South American Low-level Jet Experiment (SALLJEX 2002-3) are used to evaluate the performance of the NCEP global AVN numerical analysis. These analyses are commonly used as model initial and boundary conditions for simulations and prognostic analyses. Strong wind gradients (e.g. low-level jet), complex orography and sparse upper air and surface observations affect the representation of the atmosphere in this region reducing its accuracy. The overall structure of the biases between the analyses and the observations will be described. |
