Abstract | South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) is an important atmospheric system in southeastern Brazilian region during summer. SACZ role can be considered, eg., on local precipitation regime. Observational studies indicated that summer precipitation by several days seems to be SACZ behavior. From dynamic point of view, SACZ induces atmospheric circulations as a response to latent heat source. One of the most important local circulation aspects inside SACZ is the compensatory subsidence over polar side. Therefore, SACZ position, spatial distribution, permanence time and intensity are very important information to medium and short range numerical weather prediction. From teleconnections point of view, convective activity on central and west Equatorial Pacific are connected with SACZ. Observational and numerical analyses indicate that changes in SACZ trough may be related to wave train from Equatorial Pacific in intraseasonal time scale. These characteristics suggest an influence of Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) in SACZ region. To verify the remote influence of Rossby waves in SACZ region on intraseasonal time scale, spectral shallow-water model is used with representative basic states of MJO patterns. Two distinct situations are considered: a) SACZ region influence by Rossby wave from central and western portion Equatorial Pacific region and b) global atmospheric influence due to Rossby wave excited by convection in SACZ region. Preliminary results indicate that during MJO active phase, convective activity in western portion of Pacific Equatorial generates Rossby waves that propagate to South America and induces changes in SACZ trough. Wave train propagation trajectories are through medium or subtropical latitudes. These aspects show a strong 200 hPa basic state dependence. |
