ResumoRunoff Coefficient refers to river flow normalized by the rainfall over the basin and is the main source of freshwater to people. This work analyses the relation between runoff coefficient- RC and vegetation trough NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) in the Brazilian sub-basins during 1982 to 1999 period. NDVI is used here to investigate the relation between vegetation and coefficient runoff. Runoff Coefficient is the ratio between river flow to precipitation. At large basins, Climate Forcing, Geology, Soil and Land Cover influence coefficient runoff. These variables influence the residence time for water in the basin. Carriello, 2004 has studied the runoff coefficient over the 74 sub-Brazilian basins and found high values in western Amazon and average values in central Amazon. Averages values in the center-south and southeast, very low in the Northeast semi-arid of Brazil and in the west of Centro-Oeste (at the limits of Brazil and Bolivia). Coefficient runoff of each sub-basin was carried out using river flow from the Fluviometric Station Inventory, (Ministry of Mines and Energy, 1997), and from the National Water Agency (ANA, 2003) the dataset is in daily averages and was converted into monthly and annual averages to calculate the annual runoff for each basin. Observed precipitation data were compiled and interpolated by the Tyndall Center for Climate Change Research (New and others, 1999; 2000 and 2002). The data are available in grids of 0.5º x 0.5º for the whole terrestrial globe for the period from 1900 to 2000. NDVI was calculated using AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) imagery from NOAA satellites (7, 9, 11 e 14) from 1982 t0 1999 period. NDVI was obtained from channels 1 and 2 (red and infra-red channels) from AVHRR. To each sub-basin, the mean value of NDVI was found and correlation between RC and NDVI was calculated for each sub-basin. The statistical significance of coefficient values was evaluated at 0,05 level using the F test and in the Northeast Region was found higher coefficient correlation.
