| Abstract | The majority of forecast centers arent very concerned with the verification and evaluation their weather forecasts specially those made thru numerical modeling. In the past years, some companies started to put available to the public their forecasts as well, some using the results of the aforementioned centers, others using their own resources. For Rio de Janeiro city, there are a number of sources that make their forecasts available to the public. Besides the INMET, and CPTEC, can be found over Internet forecasts made by LPM, Sistema Alerta-Rio, and the companies SOMAR and Climatempo. This paper presents the results of weather forecast evaluation for the variables total rainfall, extreme temperatures and cloud coverage in the forecast ranges of 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours made by all mentioned sources. These are the most useful variables to the majority of public. The forecasts of each source were obtained directly from the Internet, in the respective websites. The observed values of extreme temperatures were obtained thru INMET webpage, cloud coverage were obtained thru Brazilian Air force webpage (METAR reports), and rainfall values from Sistema Alerta-Rio webpage. Here were used objective indexes to evaluate the forecasts in terms of precision, tendencies, and skill of daily forecasts made from May to December 2004, and July to October 2005. Here are published these indexes, aiming to show the public which of the offered forecasts is more trustworthy or more likely to happen. The results can be used as well to show which improvements are needed in the forecast systems used by each source. | |||
