Abstract | Patterns of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies over North Atlantic (Equator - 40ºN and 70ºW - 0º) are determined by Principal Components Analysis (PCA) to December-January-February (DJF) from 1979 to 2001. Association of these patterns with summertime convection over South America is determined by linear correlation between the time series of these patterns and Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) anomalies over this continent. Coupled modes between North Atlantic SST anomalies and OLR anomalies over South America (40ºS-20ºN to 90ºW-20ºW) are determined by SVD also to DJF from 1979 to 2001. The spatial pattern associated with the first anomalies SST mode determined by (PCA) shows one monopolo pattern. The second pattern shows an out-of-phase relationship between SST anomalies over tropical and subtropical region. The third pattern shows three action centers over Atlantic North, SST anomalies with same signal over equatorial and subtropical region and different signal over intermediate region. The first and third patterns show greater interannual variability and the second pattern interdecadal variability. The first and second pattern does not show correlation significant with summertime convection over South America. The third pattern shows correlation significant with summertime convection only over northern of South America. The convection in this region is associated with positive SST anomalies over equatorial and subtropical region and negative SST over tropical region. The first coupled mode between SST anomalies over North Atlantic and OLR anomalies over South America determined by SVD corresponds to the third mode of the SST anomalies over North Atlantic determined by PCA. Thus, apparently, third mode of the SST anomalies over North Atlantic ((Equator - 40ºN and 70ºW - 0º) has greater influence over summertime convection over South America than the two first modes. Results indicate also that North Atlantic (Equator - 40ºN and 70ºW - 0º) SST has influence only in the summertime convection over northern South America. |
