AbstractThe climate of the South American Altiplano is characterized by a summer time rainy period that occurs principally due to seasonal changes in upper-air circulation patterns associated with the South American monsoon. During this rainy period, precipitation exhibits a marked intra-seasonal variability which has in past studies been shown to be strongly related to alternating moist and dry conditions observed at stations in the Altiplanos western cordillera. In this study the detailed characteristics of wet and dry periods are examined during the summer of 2002-2003 using observational data from the South American Low-Level Jet (SALLJEX) experiment along with satellite based estimates of precipitable water (PW) from Global Positioning System (GPS), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) and passive microwave radiometer instruments. We find that wet days moist conditions (PW > 10mm) prevail across the entire plateau. The moist air is apparently brought to the Altiplano by sustained westward advection of air at similar altitude above the continental basin, which also moistens the upper atmosphere a considerable distance (> 1000 m) to the west of the plateau. In contrast, during dry events, significant drying of the boundary layer is observed mainly over the western mountain chain and over the southern Altiplano. There was no evidence of strong mid-level advection of dry air across the northern Altiplano and moisture variability is low over the northern basin eastern mountain chain. Consequently, precipitation and convective cloudiness show the strongest relation to moisture variability along the western cordillera of the Altiplano.
