AbstractA method to estimate moisture transport integrated over the depth of the atmosphere (IMT), using measurements by QuikSCAT and Special Sensor Microwave/ Imager (SSM/I), has been developed and validated. The IMT normal to the coastline of South American from August 1999 (start of QuikSCAT data) to July 2005 are compared with rainfall over the continent measured by the Tropical Rain Measuring Mission (TRMM) and provided by he Global Precipitation Climatology Project, at intraseasonal, annual, and interannual time scales. The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) has measured the mass change of Earth since April 2002. The annual variation of the rate of mass gain is also compared with the influx of moisture from the ocean. IMT integrated over all coastline peaks in January (Austral summer) the bottoms out in July and the annual variation agrees well with the total precipitation over South America. There are secondary peaks in November and May largely due to IMT from the equatorial Atlantic. The intraseasonal variation of total precipitation, which is dominated by those over the Amazon, is in phase with the IMT coming from the tropical Atlantic across the northeast coast. The interannual anomalies of Amazon rainfall are correlated with the anomalies of IMT from both Atlantic and Pacific, mostly associated with El Nino/Southern Oscillation events. The rate of mass change of South American continent show clear annual cycle, with high in January and low in July, in phase with IMT. The amplitude of its annual cycle is about 70 mm/month..
