AbstractBased on coupled model simulations will be investigate the atmospheric and oceanic response to sustained freshwater input in the North Atlantic under present day background state. The initial results demonstrate that a weakening of the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) leads to rapid changes in global sea-ice volume and enhanced poleward heat transport in the Southern Hemisphere. In the Northern Hemisphere, however, the oceanic heat transport decreases substantially. Therefore, strong cooling occurs over the North Atlantic whereas the SH extratropical region warms up. Changes of the thermohaline circulation also drastically modify the atmospheric circulation. Analyses of the high pass transient eddy activity in the lower troposphere show decreased poleward temperature flux in the SH due to lower baroclinic activity. In addition, this presentation will focus on the role of anomalous SH polar climate in leading tropical climate anomalies and vice-versa.
