Abstract | Different temporal scales of extreme temperature variability in Argentina and the relationship with other atmospheric and oceanic variables were analyzed using continuous wavelet transform. A dataset of daily minimum and maximum temperatures from 34 stations throughout the country for the period 1964-2003 was used for this purpose. Four monthly indices related to the frequency of warm and cold, nights and days were constructed (TN90, TN10,TX90 and TX10) for each station. They represent the frequency of days with minimum temperature (TN) and maximum temperature (TX) below (above) the 10th (90th) percentile. A spatial homogeneity study was performed with the K-means technique for the series under study. An annual (all months) and a seasonal (DJF, MAM, JJA, SON) classification were done. The analysis showed between 4 and 5 regions in all the country to be considered: NW (Northwest) NE (northeast), CW (center-west), P (Pampas) and Pat (Patagonia). Several coincidences were found for the same tail of the distributions. TN10 and TX10 (cold minimums and maximums) showed a similar classification. The same was observed with the TN90 and TX90 series (warm minimums and maximums). The annual spatial differentiation appeared between Patagonia and center and north of the country. When the seasonal classification is considered, some differences were observed. In summer, for example, the behavior of the series from the center of the country was closer to the Patagonias one whereas in winter and spring it resulted closer to the northern stations. Reference stations were selected in order to analyze scales of variability. The continuous wavelet transform showed differences between Patagonia and the rest of the country and revealed the presence of waves between 2 and 4 years in almost all the studied indices and seasons but not uniformly extended along the whole period. During spring, a noticeable 8-year signal appeared in the TN10 index in all the stations studied. It disappear during the last decade, when the signal begins in Patagonia. The continuous wavelet transform was performed with some SSTs series from the Atlantic Ocean in order to look for some common variability modes. Based on previous results, three Atlantic SSTs boxes were considered. They were centered at 30ºS-48ºW (SST30), 36ºS-50ºW (SST36) and 45ºS-68ºW (SST45). An important 8-year signal appeared at the beginning of the record in SST30 and SST36, and it tends to disappear at the 90s as it was observed with the TN10 series. Other variables, like humidity content and cloud cover are being related to this variability. |
