AbstractThe influence of weather parameters on Malaria outbreaks over Kilimanjaro region in two administrative districts, namely Hai and Same located in Northeastern highlands in Tanzania was investigated. Monthly rainfall, temperature, relative humidity and malaria cases data for the period 1984 to 2004 were used. Statistical methods were used to examine the temporal characteristics of malaria cases in the region including investigation of the relationship between malaria cases and climatic parameters and an effort to model malaria epidemics using the climatic parameters. The statistical methods used included time series, correlation and regression analyses. It was noted from the temporal variation of malaria cases that number of cases appeared to have the highest peak at Hai district hospital during the month of May in both 1984 and 1997, while Same district hospital observed peak number of cases during the month of March for both 2002 and 2004. Correlation analysis showed that both rainfall and temperature influence malaria cases. Significant correlation values were particularly noted during long rains observed between March and May (MAM). However, the significant correlation coefficients were higher between malaria cases and rainfall at Same hospital than at Hai district hospital. The prediction models show strong association between malaria cases during the months of August and December and the climatic parameters in MAM for Same and Hai district hospitals. The malaria prediction model meets the criteria of a simple malaria epidemic prediction modal needing no special equipment or skills and so can be used by existing health personnel using readily available temperature and rainfall data of the meteorological stations throughout the country.
