| Abstract | In the framework of a regional study intended to analyze the impact of climatic changes in water resources across the Argentinean Andes, we evaluated the interannual relationships between sea surface temperature and streamflows along the Cordillera de los Andes. We selected the following rivers: Bermejo, Atuel, Neuquén, Limay and Chubut. Statistically significant relationships were observed between streamflows from the mentioned rivers and sea surface temperatures in some regions across the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The Bermejo river streamflow is largely influenced by sea surface temperatures on the subtropical Atlantic off the Brazilian coast. The Atuel river streamflow is related to changes in sea surface temperature on the Tropical Pacific. Although significant relationships between sea surface temperatures and Northern Patagonian rivers were observed, their physical interpretation is not straightforward. The lack of sea surface temperature records south of 45°S, might be hampering the identification of the most consistent relationships between the discharges of the Limay and Chubut rivers and sea surface temperatures. Analyses of the long-term trends in streamflows and sea surface temperatures based on two subperiods indicate that important changes occurred in the mid-1970 in both streamflows across the Andes and sea surface temperatures in some regions of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. | |||
