AbstractAn eddy-permitting regional ocean model is used to examine wind forcing and the variability of the source regions of the Agulhas Current. The effects of this variability on Agulhas ring formation and inter-ocean leakage south of Africa is investigated by means of a retroflections index. On the annual mean, the re-circulation of the Agulhas Current back into the South Indian Ocean is by far the dominant contribution to the volume transport of the Agulhas Current. It was found to be partly in phase with the wind stress curl over the subtropical Indian Ocean, but more with the local winds. On interannual timescales, a relationship was found in the model between the transport of the re-circulation and of the Agulhas Current. Consistent with observations, the model flow through the Mozambique Channel is dominated by eddies with a weak flow in the eastern part of the channel. Weak cyclonic eddies appear in the southeastern part of the channel due to interaction between southward flow in the eastern channel and westward flow south of Madagascar. The East Madagascar Current shows both an annual and semi-annual variation in transport at 20°S, partly in phase with the local winds and also possibly influenced by variability in the South Equatorial Current. South of about 24°S, the East Madagascar Current breaks down into a series of eddies. Sensitivity of the flows in the source regions and in the retroflection index to a southward shift in the mean winds was investigated. It was found that the transport increased in the re-circulation region and there was increased mesoscale activity as well as reduced leakage of the flow into the South East Atlantic.
